Geek Holiday Time! Pt 1

What better way to jazz up another crappy "Novempoopy" but to celebrate geekdom?

This Sunday marks the 45th anniversary of Doctor Who!

On Saturday Nov. 23rd 1963 at 5:15pm Doctor Who was broadcast for the first time on BBC. William Hartnell starred as the Doctor, and it received a 9% share -- which is respectable, even by todays standards. Although, if you think about it -- people only had 2 or 3 channels in the 60s didn't they? Does that mean 91% were watching ITV? (I just looked it up actually -- apparantly 8% of people tuned in to ITV at that time -- I guess the rest were just watching static).

Anyhoo -- to celebrate this landmark the BBC website has put up a few links to some of the Doctor Who Archives. There's some interesting stuff there, including some research BBC did on Sci Fi to see if such a show could do well. The best stuff is some of the original outlines for what the show was to be. Originally the Doctor had an invisible spaceship. That would look kind of like a bubble (not that invisible I guess) -- Sydney Newman noted that it might be better if the Doctor's ship was a familliar object that people would recognise from the street...like a Nightwatchmens booth. The rest is history! Also worth noting is the orignal concept for the "secret of Doctor Who" -- Click the images below to get a closer view.

All images are property of the BBC obviously. Check out the actual site here.
